Health & PE

The purpose of this required Health & PE course is to improve our students’ overall health. Students will develop the knowledge and skills to enhance mental and emotional well-being, as well as their personal and consumer health. Other study areas include healthy and effective interpersonal communication and relationship skills; self-management skills in the areas of nutrition and physical activity for healthy growth, development, and maintenance; and the danger related to substance abuse.
UCHS is in partnership with the Hickory YMCA to teach our Physical Education classes where students will develop proficiency in a variety of movement forms to gain competence toward lifetime physical activities. Our partnership with the YMCA provides our students with excellent instructors and state-of-the-art facilities. In addition, freshmen and student-athletes have the opportunity for a free membership to enjoy all the amenities of the YMCA outside of school.
Each year UCHS participates in the program “Relationships” as part of the Teen Series specially designed for 9th graders. The course is presented by educators from the Council on Adolescents of Catawba County who have been specifically trained in this area. A copy of the curriculum for this program is available in the school office if you wish to review the curriculum in person.
Pre-requisites and further details can be found in COURSE CATALOG.
