UCHS KICKS OFF INDEPENDENCE CAMPAIGN University Christian High School is a unique, parochial, early-college high school, operating independently in a partnership of faith and learning with Lenoir-Rhyne University. Our mission is to provide a Christ-centered education that inspires each student to achieve excellence in academics, moral character, and servant leadership, awakening a voice of conscience and developing the communication skills needed to express that voice. Our students learn to go to college before they go to college! The Independence Campaign is underway to raise operating funds in one-time gifts and pledges. GRADUATIONFriday, May 31 7:00 pm St. Andrew's Lutheran Church
GOATS FOR HAITIAfter all the cookies have been baked and sold, grains of rice counted, valentines offered, matching funds secured, and money jars or ashtrays emptied, UCHS students raised over $2300 for the purchase of goats for Laotchikit, Haiti. UCHS began raising funds for goats in 2011. Last year over $1700 was raised for the purchase of goats through Samaritan's Purse. After a visit from Pastor Walta of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Laotchikit earlier this year, Student Council voted to direct this year's goat money to this needy village in Haiti. As the result of a generous donation from Thrivent Foundation, along with their own efforts, monies raised will go to the purchase of 47 goats. This will be a tremendous asset to these families who saw such devastation from the natural disasters that have hit Haiti in recent years.
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM WEEK Students at UCHS are finding themselves less and less constrained by classroom walls as teachers look outside the school building for learning opportunities. Just this year, students had a one-on-one session with best-selling author, Nicholas Sparks, at LRU’s Visiting Writers Program; Environmental Science students accompanied LRU students in the same subject area to the Blackburn Landfill in Newton for a joint experiential field trip; foreign language students went to lunch at a local Mexican restaurant to practice their Spanish-speaking skills; and students were introduced to the college search process with visits to UNC-Greensboro and High Point University where they had the opportunity to tour the campuses and speak to admissions representatives. Besides academic opportunities, UCHS is now looking beyond the classroom and into their community to fulfill the SERVICE portion of their mission. May 18 will begin what is being called "Beyond the Classroom Week" at UCHS. Between Saturday and Wednesday, UCHS students will provide over 600 hours of service to such agencies as Corner Table, ECCCM, Concordia Christian Day School, the Conover School, and Habitat for Humanity. The week will culminate with a trip to Charleston, SC. The trip will include educational experiences in Environmental Science and History, cultural exposure through Spoleto Festival, and some plain old fun as students close out the school year.
100% COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES For the second year in a row, UCHS is proud to announce that 100% of its graduating seniors have received college acceptances. Schools include: Lenoir-Rhyne University, University of Georgia, UNC-Asheville and Wilmington, NC State, Western Carolina, Wingate, Elon, ASU, UNC-Chapel Hill, Clemson, and Wofford.
